Making sustainability our business

Every day the employees of Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries (MBLL) work for the good of Manitoba. Our 2024-25 Environmental, Social and Governance Report provides a snapshot of our performance on a wide range of economic, environmental and social impacts, as well as our governance practices. It highlights both our achievements, as well as opportunities for improvement, and reflects our ongoing commitment to being accountable and transparent to Manitobans. Here are a few highlights from the report.

We're dispelling myths about gambling for Manitobans.

As part of our ongoing effort to improve understanding about the risks of gambling, we launched a new Informed Gambling program to better serve the needs of our casino, VLT, lottery, and PlayNow customers last year. We also released our first multi-channel marketing campaign that exposes common gambling myths, while also encouraging players to get additional information on gambling and ways to lower their risk by visiting our website or new Informed Gambling Centres in our casinos.

We're more climate friendly thanks to Manitoba livestock farmers

While MBLL works to reduce carbon emissions across its entire business, we are also sensitive to how indirect emissions sources – including those related to our restaurant operations – impact the environment. To help keep carbon in the ground we contributed over $72,000 to the Manitoba Habitat Conservancy to support implementation of a Grassland Stewardship Program on a bison farm near Souris, Manitoba. The program supports sustainable land management practices that help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and promote habitat biodiversity for livestock operations.

Electric Vehicles

We continued our EV transition

MBLL currently operates six electric and two hybrid automobiles in its fleet of 87 vehicles, with plans to significantly increase the number of EVs that we operate in the years ahead. To support our transition to electric power we installed a bank of ten Level 2 charging stations at our 1390 Pacific Avenue property.

We’re changing how we buy

While price always matters when it comes to corporate purchases, MBLL is now also considering the economic, social and environmental impacts of who we buy from. Accordingly, we’ve adjusted our procurement policies and procedures to also allow us to evaluate proposals based on supplier diversity, environmental impact, accessibility and overall community benefit.
