Status of US-made liquor in Manitoba

Last updated June 2026

Responding to American tariffs against Canadian exports to the United States, in March 2025 the Province of Manitoba directed Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries (MBLL) to cease purchasing, distributing and selling liquor made in the US. Existing inventory was pulled from Liquor Marts shelves.

In December 2025, the Province of Manitoba directed MBLL to re-open distribution and sell through that existing inventory.

Licensed establishments and stores are currently able to order remaining inventory from MBLL.

Liquor Mart - Controlled Entrances - January 2020

In 2019, a dramatic increase in brazen thefts and robberies in many Liquor Mart locations reached a breaking point, causing major safety concerns for customers and employees, becoming a significant burden on police services, and costing Manitobans.

Controlled entrances were introduced the following year, resulting in a major reduction in thefts and robberies.
